Well I am delighted to say that the first new blog from the Sunderland conference has emerged. Peter Kerr, who was an attendee at Friday’s event, was in touch to let me know he’s been inspired to start a blog.

Hi Tom – I was at the event in Sunderland and I was very impressed. However, it has not convinced me that I need to start a Blog on behalf of my company. That doesn’t mean that I didn’t learn anything or that we won’t be doing something in the future, but it struck me that many of the reasons for corporate blogs are to do with responsiveness. I think I’ve got that part cracked on our web-site. What we do need to do is pay attention to what people our writing about us in Blogs and define how we respond. What are your thoughts on that? Chris Webb – CODA
Chris I think you’re right. Not every company needs to actually start a “corporate blog” but it is important to be aware of conversations that are going on, and perhaps even to comment on a few relevant blogs. There are lots of tools, both free and paid-for, that enable you to monitor what’s happening. You might also want to track your “share of voice” or “conversation gap”.
But from my knowledge of Coda I also think your comment in Business Link was the most pertinent. An internal blog for employees or your Alliance Member Network is something that you could possibly get greater immediate benefit from.

Chris,
Just to echo Stuart’s comments, there is no need to start a blog just for the sake of it. Being aware of what’s happening about your company online is the first step.
However, as the online audience grows there may be opportunities to engage with that audience using blogs – maybe not. It’s very much specific to your business.
I think the most important thing is that people realize the opportunities, potential and pitfalls to online conversation.
Once you’re comfortable with those issues you can then make educated decisions on the best way to proceed for your business.
Thanks
Tom
